"And you look a hundred times better than Em. I bet she shows up in a trashy short thing," Ian smirked. "This?" He gestured to her with an open palm that he lowered like Vanna White. "Pure class." He gave her a smile, "You and your mom really went all out for this. I know people won't be looking at me." The last line was cheesy and he flashed a grin to prove he knew it.

“Oh shut up, “ Anjya laughed as they walked through the front doors of the dance hall. Loud booming music that had built up until they crossed the threshold now crescendoed. Lights flashed, immediately painting Anjya and Ian in red, white, then yellow, then blue. She glanced around, the entire place more than a little crowded, but didn’t see Em right off the bat. “Dancing or mingling first?” She leaned up to call into Ian’s ear.

"Let's dance. I don't want to be looking around thinking about who is here." Ian took her hand and led her through the crowd without hesitating. Dancing had never been his forte, but he had gotten better at it with time-- and practice, mostly at Anjya and Tellisie's expense. It didn't take him long to find the beat and start grooving with it.

Anjya didn’t hesitate to follow, already bouncing to the beat with every step. By the time they were on the dance floor she had broken out into a full dance, one hand always in Ian’s though never the same for long. She had inherited her mother’s grace at least, which meant dancing was just another language in her repertoire.

Ian found himself forgetting about the reason Anjya had to drag him out of the house tonight as the song went on, then even moreso as another quick-tempoed song replaced it at its end. He was laughing as he danced his way through the song, smiling at Anjya and leading her through a turn or two or a few even goofy moves. The third song, though, was a slow one, and he made a slight face as couples started filling the floor and edging closer to each other. "Want to go see if we can find anyone we know?" He asked, leaning in close to Anjya as he made the suggestion to get off the floor.

“Let’s check over by the drinks!” Anjya agreed breathlessly, her eyes dancing even if her feet had calmed. Taking his hand she began to weave through the couples to the punch bowl table. A couple of bored chaperones were chatting off in the corner and a few teens, including some faces Anjya vaguely recognized as being upper class.

Ian grinned, following close behind his best friend and making sure his hand didn't slip from hers. At the punch bowl table, he began to pour cups, "So far, this isn't as bad as I thought," he informed her with laughter. As he handed Anjya her cup, he caught sight of a classmate from his English class, "Hey Johnny," he greeted.

The teen in question approached, his arm around the waist of a girl that Anjya would definitely have known from the pep squad. She was wearing the kind of dress that Ian had bet Em would be wearing and didn't look at all pleased to be seeing Anjya or Ian. Johnny, a fairly average looking teen boy with dark hair and dark eyes, didn't seem to mind Ian's presence, though. "Hey Ian. What're you doing here? I didn't think you would come," he confessed.

Ian shrugged, "Why not?"

Johnny looked awkwardly around for a second, then shrugged, "The music rocks, but the snacks are kind of lame," he confessed, changing the subject. "Sophie and I were going to go check out outside in a bit. I heard they did this enchanted forest path thing. You guys should check it out later, too." He passed Sophie a cup of punch.

Anjya took her cup of punch and sipped it, her smile wide and her chest still heaving from dancing. Her attention turned to the couple now approaching - and she made sure to keep her smile easy and carefree at the sight of her former teammate.

“Hi Soph, nice dress.” She complimented, because she wasn’t about to stoop to the level of her former teammates or their silence that seemed required by Em.

Sophie looked down at her dress, a deep purple strapless number with a corset bodess that was practically see through beneath the chest other than the corset ribbing.   The skirt was rouched, tight, and short, and had a slit that screamed self-image problems.  Salu would have lost his mind completely had Anjya picked a dress in this style.  He would surely have lectured her about class and elegance, told her about all the different ways she had value and worth that wasn't tied to such appearances, and then he would have personally returned the dress himself.

One of Sophie's hands absent-mindedly smoothed a hem down at the compliment Anjya had given her.   An 'mhm' was the only true acknowledgement given, then Sophie sipped her punch.

Johnny didn't say anything about the interaction, but looked at Ian, obviously feeling the awkward vibe his girlfriend was giving off, "I know it's taboo to talk about school work at prom, but... that final project is freaking me out.  Any chance--?"

Ian gave a nod, "Yeah.  Hit me up next week," he confirmed he would help out.

Johnny gave a grin that looked relieved, then smiled at Anjya, "You look great," he told her, sounding maybe just a little too sincere about it.

Sophie scowled, "I'm bored, let's go," she insisted, side-eyeing her former teammate.

“Thank you,” Anjya grinned Johnny’s way, ignoring the waves of hatred wafting from his date. She slid a hand onto Ian’s arm. “Ian look, they are doing pictures over there.” She pointed to the set up and finished her punch. “Let’s go get a picture.”

Ian flashed a grin at Anjya, "Definitely," he agreed with ease, happy to have an excuse for them to get away from Sophie and her attitude. As he started to walk away, he spotted another pep squad girl and her date walking over. While her dress was a different color than Sophie's, the style was the exact same. Apparently there had been a team memo that hadn't been extended to Anjya.

Out of there just in the nick of time to avoid it all.

"Ugh. So classless," Ian muttered with a shake of his head once they were out of earshot.

“I don’t know, it is kind of like they wanted to-“ Anjya trailed off as she heard a familiar laugh. A sweep of her gaze had it falling straight into Em who was currently off in the corner. She was in a tight dress that barely reached mid-thigh as well, but there was an extra sheer piece that fell to the floor. It was very fashion forward- but all Anjya could think of was dress mullet. Of course, her dress wasn’t what caught Anjya’s attention the most. It was Peter who was currently telling some animated story to a group of guys, Em doing her best to hang off him and laugh- a laugh that sounded as sincere as Em’s commitment.

Ian followed Anjya's gaze with his own eyes, his posture stiffening just slightly when he saw Em. He shifted his grip a little more so that his arm was more definitively linked with Anjya's. "C'mon, let's go do pictures or something..." he murmured, his mood darkening and his eyes reflecting it. He didn't want to see Em tonight, but he definitely didn't want to lock eyes with her.

“Smile.” Anjya reminded Ian, perhaps ten seconds before Em looked their way- but Anjya was already stepping over to the Photo Booth area with Ian, doing her best to ignore the bitch who hurt her best friend.

Ian wasn't a bitter person. He wasn't. But he was, at the moment, a jaded human being. So when Em caught his eyes, Ian only needed an extra second to put the giant smile on his face and focus on his friend. It might be petty, but it was also real-- because, unlike Em, Ian was genuine and he was with someone who was genuine. He grinned at Anjya, "Silly or serious?" He asked her, then stuck his tongue out and crossed his eyes for effect.

“Silly then serious.” Anjya laughed and elbowed Ian before she draped herself over Ian making a funny face herself. When the camera clicked she immediately switched to a sober expression. Another click and she grinned, hugging Ian for the sake of the photo.

Ian posed for each photo, matching Anjya's expressions with his own to fit the mood of each. When she hugged him for the third, Ian's arm wrapped around her waist. It wasn't uncomfortable or strange the way that it had been when his father had insisted on it earlier. This was just the two of them being friends. After the third photo, Ian burst into laughter, not realizing a fourth one was taken while he laughed. "They are going to want copies of these," he announced to Anjya, referring to all four adult guardians.

“You have the pockets.” Anjya reminded Ian lightly before the music changed. She gave a gasp and grabbed his hand, hardly giving him time to grab the photos. “Dance floor!” She demanded and half dragged him to the center, determined to enjoy a favorite song.

This was the pattern. Dancing until they needed a breath, a glass of punch, greeting Ian’s friends and receiving dirty looks from any girl from the pep squad. Em obviously was doing her best to put on a show as well, dancing with Peter - once- it seemed dancing wasn’t really his thing, but hanging with guys from the swim team was.

It was one of the breaks from dancing that had Anjya finally breaking her promise to Ian about staying by his side. It was for a good reason, of course- she couldn’t exactly bring him into the girls’ restroom. Anjya glanced at her reflection once before disappearing into a stall, seeing her hair was holding up decently, and her smile was wide. The bathroom was surprisingly empty.

“-can’t believe he brought that sophomore.” The sound of the door opening was accompanied by at least three sets of feet. Anjya paused in adjusting her dress in the stall, her ears perking up. There was only one sophomore at this dance.

“Oh please, it’s just a front.” Another voice, familiar, pep squad. The owner of the voice joined the stall by Anjya while another laughed and went into another.

“What do you mean?” A girl at the sink questioned.

“Em told me not to say.”

A snort escaped from a third girl.

“Oh c’mon. You couldn’t keep a secret if it would kill you.”

Snickers and laughter. Anjya was silently egging the girl on herself.

“Pfft, you’re right. Fine. Ian apparently…well…he swings for the other team.”

Anjya suddenly scowled, slipping her fingers over her lips to keep in an outraged noise. A girl gasped, the other-

“What? Like for the Raiders?”

There was silence then laughter.

“Like for men, you dingus.” The first girl left her stall. All three burst into laughter. Anjya waited for them to leave, a heat building deep in her chest. She stepped out of the stall, checking that none of them were left as she went to the sink to wash up. Her mind was racing. How dare that bitch. Anjya had known Em would spread something- but this?? She looked at her reflection , heard starting to turn. The anger her mother always attributed to the Italian in her built. A roar filled her ears.

So that was how Em wanted to play it?

Pride & Persistence - Page 8 Empty Re: Pride & Persistence

Post by Oddballgymnast Sun May 12, 2024 11:02 pm

Maybe the dance wasn't so bad... maybe Anjya wasn't so wrong about them coming tonight... By the time that Anjya was splitting away from Ian to use the restroom, leaving Ian standing with a group of his friends near the doorway to the 'enchanted forest path' outside, Ian felt better about the whole night.  He had practically become an expert at keeping the pep squad girls from getting too close by redirecting their own activities-- if the feminine cloud of spite was hovering around the refreshments, Ian would direct Anjya to the dance floor, back to the photo booth, or even outside to the enchanted path.  He had gotten better at finding his happy as the night went on and he spoke with his friends in between dances.   They talked about a game, plans for next year, or summer trips.  Sometimes one of the boys would talk about a girl, or compliment Anjya.  Ian had definitely been right-- there was a lot of male attention on Anjya tonight.

And so far, they had completely avoided running into Em.  In fact, Ian was pretty sure he had only even noticed her existence less than a handful of times.  He was actually enjoying himself with Anjya.

"Hey-" Theo, a linebacker of a kid, turned to Ian.  The conversation died down a little in the group and the other boys gave Ian a bit of look that said they knew where this was about to go.

Ian sighed and held a hand up, reading the clues.  "I don't want to-" he insisted, glancing over his shoulder for Anjya's return.

Theo nodded, "I just wanted to say that we feel for you, man.  It was screwed up."  There were nods and murmurs of consent around Ian.  It was support as they knew how to do it.

Ian gave a simple nod and smile in return, "I'm better off without her."

"Uh- hell yeah.  And your date looks hella fine," a shortstop cut in, giving a little whistle.

Ian laughed at the shortstop, opening his mouth to explain that Anjya wasn't his date at all.

Pride & Persistence - Page 8 Empty Re: Pride & Persistence

Post by ChaoticDreamer Mon May 13, 2024 8:59 am

Every step from the mirror to out of the bathroom, past the punch and through crowds of teens that seemed to part for Anjya like the Red Sea, built the roar louder in Anjya’s ears. There wasn’t much thought, because if there was- she certainly wouldn’t be making this move. She certainly would have taken a pause before following her instinct as she approached Ian, right where she had left him. She certainly would have run a plan by him first- and he probably would have said no. She certainly would have…

But temper had the reigns. So as she stepped up to Ian, her hands lifted up to his chest. It was that movement one might make to get their date to lean down to hear them whisper- but then her hands were tangling in his hair, and instead of her lips finding his ear, they were on his mouth- and the most heated kiss that Anjya could muster was now taken from her best friend, lips parted, tongue delving, body pressing against Ian’s like Anjya wanted to climb inside him. There was a demand in her form, that he didn’t break this, or ruin it.

Then it shifted.

Something in Anjya clicked, and the kiss transformed, it softened, her fingers loosened and slid more gently through his hair, the roar in her ears turned into a pounding- a heat licked up her belly-

Anjya finally broke the kiss, breathless. Her lips were swollen, the red gloss that she had painstakingly picked now smeared on her best friend’s lips. Reality began to sink in, at what she had just done- maybe a second before Em shoved past the group with angry stomps, a trail of pep squad girls following after her.

Pride & Persistence - Page 8 Empty Re: Pride & Persistence

Post by Oddballgymnast Mon May 13, 2024 6:44 pm

Ian had been just about to get the words out that he and Anjya weren't dating, but then his best friend was back.  It wasn't unusual to hear someone call them an extra limb for the other, but a second skin?

That was exactly the way it felt to have Anjya on him-- like they had melded in a new way.  Ian's confusion came hard and fast, his eyes open and his hands going to her waist like a brace about to push her away.  What was Anjya doing?  Why was her tongue down his throat?

There was something about it that was insistent, something that stopped him from shoving her back.  Instead, his hands slipped around her to the small of her back and drew her close.

It was right around the time that warmth came from the kiss, a switch from desperation to... to... sincerity?  And there wasn't a moment's hesitation as he met this kiss with something of his own.  He fell into the trap of interest, sincerity, feeling.  And he didn't know what he was feeling, but it was strong and powerful.  And it left his chest heaving as the kiss broke.  He fought for his own breath, but a grin overtook his lips-- confusion danced in his eyes and mingled with the joy that had befallen the latter half of the kiss.

When Em and the rest of the girls stormed through the group, Ian barely noticed.  He barely noticed the guys around them were making kissy noises, half cheering for the pair, and wolf whistling.   His eyes remained trained on Anjya's... and he definitely didn't let her go.  "Wow- uhm-" he chuckled breathlessly.  "- uhm- want to walk outside?" He murmured, fighting to make his brain catch up and figure out what to do.  Slowly, he released Anjya, but his hands never left her completely, posing on her hips to allow a little distance if she were to take it.

Anjya stared back up at Ian, her breath falling a bit more roughly from between open lips. She caught his smile, and a familiar flush began to heat her neck and collarbone. Vaguely she was aware the kiss had done its job- though there was a finish line still to cross. Vaguely, she knew Em had stormed past and that Ian's friends had all cheered him on...

But her heart was thundering in her chest told her the kiss had potentially done more than she had intended. Anjya had irreversibly split a path, in a way she couldn't yet see or fathom the consequences of.

"...Outside... yeah..." She finally breathed out, rapidly breaking the eye contact Ian held so she could find her bearings. She spied the doors open to the outdoor courtyard and took Ian's hand from one of her hips, using it to guide him through the crowd. Someone shouted some kind of encouragement to Ian, Anjya's pulse throbbed. She led Ian outside- then, seeing a bunch of classmates out by the water fountain, she was quick to pull him into the 'maze' the class council had made with cheap plywood boards painted to look like hedges. She took one turn, and then another, until she suddenly was met with a dead end-

As private as it would come-

Anjya turned on her heel abruptly to face Ian, caught sight of the gloss still on his lips and quickly grabbed the hankerchief from his jacket pocket, offering it up to him like it was hers to offer. "You have something- there-" she explained, not meeting his eyes as she waved towards her own lips.

Ian's mind raced as he navigated through the crowd with Anjya, though a number of students moved easily out of the way. His heart pounded in a way that he knew and understood... and yet... didn't.

By the time Anjya was stopping in the made, Ian was staring at her like she had grown three heads. But instead of looking confused or scared, he had the same determined look in his eye that he always did when trying to solve a puzzle. Anjya had never even looked at him like she wanted to kiss him. She had never hinted that they would ever be more than friends. ... and yet... this was definitely making him question his own thoughts along those lines. "There was a reason," he deduced in what almost sounded completely calm-- in only the way that Ian could. "What was it?" He whispered the question plainly. He needed to understand. If this was a chess game, then Anjya had just become a piece on the board... or another player. He needed to know which and he needed to know why she had moved the way she had. Only after he understood would he know how to respond and act next.

Anjya let out a breathless laugh, even as her cheeks superheated. “Of course-“ she paused as she looked at him. A noise escaped her. “I can’t with you covered in lip gloss-“ she reached up and wiped the most offending pieces of gloss from his face. Avoiding his eyes, she began to explain. “Of course there was a reason,” her voice was soft, even as her heart still began to thud. “I wouldn’t just accost you without your permission if there wasn’t… Em is spreading a rumor about you…” she finished cleaning him up.

Ian clearly hadn't been paying attention to the handkerchief that Anjya wanted to hand him a moment ago and looked surprised as she now began to wipe the lip gloss from his face. He caught on a minute too late, took the cloth and rubbed at the spot where the lip gloss had been for himself. He then folded the handkerchief over and wiped at the flesh around Anjya's lips with the clean side-- working to ensure the smudged lip gloss didn't remain anywhere it wasn't supposed to be. "Uhm- okay- what kind of rumor?" He asked, confused. "I mean... I figured it was already one about me and you... so that doesn't fit."
